Scale Model Shop

Airfix 2022 range launched.

I usually take little or no notice of Airfix launches, primarily because they do not produce 1/32 scale aircraft and for 1/24 their horrible soft plastic puts me off.

This time, however, as I am soon to start a series of small-scale 1/48 builds, that Buccaneer looks very tempting, one of my favourite post war aircraft. I just hope Airfix don’t cock it up with their low production standards and do justice to it.

I can’t help but feel a little underwhelmed. I’d love the Buccaneer in 1/48 but the price tag is prohibitive for me.

Rick,
quite agree with you, not a lot of surprises there! What did surprise me was the high prices - Airfix will have to really raise their standards & availiblity to compete. I know model prices are rising, but they seem a little OTT

They tell us that they won't release anything that isn't correct, or will look wrong to a Hornby train buyer ( stated more than once on "Hornby A Model World" show from yesterday channel )

....... But happily re-release the JS-3 , which is according to many old reviews ..... INACCURATE

I'm still awaiting my Austin K2/Y Ambulance which I pre ordered after last years launch :disappointed2: :sad-face: :angry::angry:

Yes, probably had the wind taken out of the sales ( sails ) by the other release by Gecko.

All Hornby trains run on track that is far too narrow, so I wouldn’t take too much notice of that statement Gary :tongue-out3:

At least they didn’t call it new. It dates from about 1963 Andy :thumb2:

Hmmm,Yes Tim,i`ve looked on Ebay and currently there are a couple which are up for £30 + P&P!!!! :flushed:
....... well,i guess that`s Ebay for you currently!!:poop::poop:

Some interesting stuff there but jeez ! the prices !!? Theyve really shot up , probably about 40% from a few years ago . I mean yes the Buccaneer will be a beautiful kit but £ 72 for a 1/48 ? Even the new 1/72 is very steep at £33 .They’ll price themselves out of the market if theyre not careful . Ironic thing is their smaller 1/72 are great value and lovely kits .

Don’t knock it, I got about forty quid for my old early 1970s copy of Fearless during the first lockdown :thumb2:

So, ALL the V bombers at the same time, that could be an attractive line up.
The close up look at the 1/24 super Spit does look very detailed.
YEAH a new tooled 1/48 brick. How much?! Really?
The Avro Anson looked pretty good.
Loads of Falkland Crisis re pops.
How long can Airfix carry on selling those ancient kits as a classic? If the subject is interesting enough to justify dusting off those knackered old tools, many of which are almost as old as I am, then make a new tooling.

I think the prices probably reflect what Airfix expect to happen to their shipping costs this year.

I'll be interested to see if they can actually deliver all of these within the current year.

I will wait for the RAF version of the Bucc. and hope I'm still working so I can afford it!

Nick

Airfix aren't the only ones guilty of this - but in this day and age charging £8.99 for a paper catalogue seems a bit anachronistic!

I’m really disappointed with their Falklands Conflict era kits to be honest. There was a real chance to re-issue more of the Vintage Classic kits associated with the war, look what Airfix did with the Top Gun range.
All I see for this era is a Sea Harrier and HMS Fearless. No Pucara, Chinook, SS Canberra etc.

I don’t think that the price is too steep, provided the quality of the kit is good.

Look at SMS, there are plenty of comparable 1/48 post war jets at this price and higher, the ZM and Tamiya F4’s and then the Kitty Hawk MIg25 and MiG 30. Trumpeter and even Revell have higher priced comparable kits as well

That’s without mentioning the ‘biggies’ of course like the Lancs and B17…

Sorry folks but this is about the right price for a quality kit. The only question is whether Airfix can produce it to a consistent high quality and overcome their quality control issues. Even so it cannot be worse that what Revell and Kitty produce in that price range.

A rise in prices is no surprise, it’s the huge leap that takes your breath away. I’ve been following this price creep over the years and see a comparison with the model railway hobby. What was very affordable to me ten years ago is now unjustifiable now which is why I no longer have a model railway.
I get all the reasons why prices are rising, but the reality is quite brutal.
