Well I have now finished the panel line washes and applied a single thin matt coat. This is because the next processes are best done on a matt surface. Some pics

At first I was heavy handed with the panel line wash, partly due to the lack of panel lines relative to the large number of rivet lines. On such a large model, working in sections, I was able to refine the way I worked and experiment. In the end I ended up doing the underside of the wings last and just flowing the wash into the panel lines and in a couple of strategic places. Then using a large flat brush, dampened in odourless thinner, I worked the wash removing the surplus and in doing so filled the rivet lines with it. A lot less product was used and the clean up was a lot quicker.


It does take some practise to get used to new products but these AK washes are superb and I will definately say they are the best I have used. Next time I will have a better idea of how they behave and it will be a lot easier.


Do make sure you have a good gloss coat to take them, one that is well cured too.


I certainly recommend these washes. They do exactly what you want them to do, remove that new factory fresh look from the paint and flow well into the detail. My experimentation also shows that you need not be afraid of applying too much as you can very easily remove the surplus but it does take a little time and patience to do so.


I will next be using a prismatic silver pencil for chipping effects then applying some pigments before the final matt coat.

Well the Tiffy is finished.


On the final matt coat I did the oil and fuel leak weathering and added some highlights to the chips and wear with the silver pencil. Then the final fittings....


One recommendation for you.


Whatever you do see if you can get some white metal undercarriage legs. This is a heavy model and the kit legs are not strong enough. There are also vulnerable pins that are easily broken off. This gave me some issues in the final fit.

This is a nice kit and an enjoyable build. Yes there are issues and more should be expected for £100 but nothing is insurmountable. The design and engineering are second to none it is just the poor manufacturing standard that let Airfix down. You simply cannot get away with it on this scale. I think the main problem is the quality of the plastic as I suspect it is prone to more shrinkage than a harder plastic. This may not be such a problem in a small scale, 1/72 or 1/48, but in 1/24 the problem magnifies.


As for the AK Interactive products. First class. The paints are better than Vallejo in every sense. The pigments are finer and work well while the enamel washes are first class but need some practise.

Superb Barry! its been great watching this come together , its a perfect reference for anyone else building this kit. I imagine its impressively sized , (havent seen one built in the flesh yet , though they'll probably be all over at the Cosford show!) and is going to look great on the shelf.
