boatman's 1/72 HMS Tiger C20 build

Reading a couple of model boating forums, many of them are saying a three bladed propellor should be adequate but are referring to 385's, (Motors??) and 30mm props. I'm starting feel just a tad of how you must be feeling Chris - It's a minefield. I don't envy you.
I don't think I'll moan too much about PE in the future!!!

So 88 1/2 pound is not that much. (40kg) not that much. I was expecting 188Lbs the way you was talking. lol.
So a cam belt drive is a gearbox with a belt. right.
As over £40 a pop for a drive unit. it would be cheaper and easier to put a slower motor in.
You should be able to buy those motors still. You can get them over here anyway.

If they are the right ones that is. £20 a pop.... but then you still have a fast motor. I am sure you could find them in the UK.
Try here: https://www.motorsandrotors.co/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=139_274&products_id=6259
I would go for something like these.
https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/lrp-truck-puller-3-br-motor-6300rpm-12v-37685
They cost about 35 quid, but you wouldn't need the reduction box.... They can turn a 130mm screw! and they are the recommended motor for R/C tug boats.
I would say that they would push Tiger more than quick enough.

If I may say I think the props are a bit small at just over an inch. I was expecting them to be at least 2inch. Is that the radius you have given or the diametre?
It looks like there is not a lot of room for much bigger props though.

I hope that you find some of this useful. Perhaps a talk with the chap in the Modelsport link could help clear things up.

Say hi to Jen.
HI Ian cheers for this info an yes these graupner 600 motors are the ones i want as they are the ones i have always used so firstly hopefully if dry tomorrow i will fit just the hull an batts in the test tank an ask jen to open the throttle while i hold the hull an see how much propulshion she has with these motors in but if not no good then i will try an send for two of these grupner 600 motors from model sport cheers for finding them an take the two out of my norfolk an replace them with the unused motors as got to keep costs down if possible as this is the only way i can think of as these old grupners motors i had in were faulty thats why fuses blew so i'll see what happens tomorrow in test tank CHEERS FOR YOUR HELP SIR
chrisb an jen an jen says hi to you also

I really feel for you Chris. The Tiger is really biting back. I hope all the setbacks at this late stage don't dampen your spirits. You will have a break through soon! :tongue-out3:
HI Jim i really hope so but its a job to know what motors an props i need on this ship as she is very heavy in my opinion but ive spent to much dosh an time to give up now an i think them groupner 600 motors an the cam belt drive are the ones i need as ive always used these an never had any probs before so thats where my confidence lies

At £240 for 4 bit pricey but they are the only reduced drive motors I can find at the moment!!!

MFA TORPEDO 850 WITH BELT DRIVE UNIT

No idea if they are too powerful or will fit. I'll keep on browsing!!!!
AN Doug THESE one are way to big as ive seen these at a model show an i dont think they do any smaller ones as the motors shaft is to big but cheers for lookin

Thinking about you today Chris. Hope you have a successful day either curing or fault finding.

Just out of interest. Did the plan's specify the motors and propellor size or were they left to the builder to sort out?

ATB buddy

OH DEAR my day was a disater as yes i sailed tiger at 9am this morn without the S/S on an i was not pleased with them motors as i thought it was slow an sluggish an still a 50 ft turning circle an then to make matter worst the flamein wind got up really high an blew my hat off an only a few small boats were able to sail in this wind but i dint dare put tiger on the pond as it would have been blown into the concrete sides of the pond an then to make maters worst i just left her on show for the day shootin off the guns an such an then when we were packin up i done a silly thing as i put the main S/S in a box to protect it in travel on my chair an that blasted wind blew it off onto the concrete so there is a little damage which can be rapaired but i think tiger is jinked im at a loss on what motors an maybe bigger props to to fit to get her movin OH DEAR chrisb
