Nice little kit this one, but it will be my last excursion into 1/72 for a while. I'm swapping the lenses on my magnifier back to something less powerful

It's an anti slip/wear material on the wing walkway. It was supposed to protect the area and stop you falling off. WW2 versions were usually black (I've seen some modern grey ones) but apparently early Blenheims had a silver-grey version.
Later versions had a black one on the port side and another smaller one on the other side. There was a small drag penalty so fighters often did not have them. However, there must have been a penalty for this sort of wear too.


The the wing root is an area in which a lot of drag can be generated so anything that can be done to mitigate that is a good thing. It's why the Spitfire has that huge wing root fillet and why the paint finish was supposed to be carefully maintained. That photograph was taken when their were other more pressing priorities but would have been unacceptable on a UK based aircraft a year later.

Yep, you can see the hand and foot holds up the port side for the gunner.
