That’s my final shift at work completed after just over 30 years on the railway. Now we just need to get the house move concluded so I can get to my hobby full time. No more shifts and early alarm calls . My new boss might be tough though but I did marry her 😂

Great news! Enjoy your retirement mate.
I retired just under two years ago, but have settled into a nice routine.
My one tip would be to keep yourself busy. Without "work" you lose that bit of routine and it would be easy to slip into just lounging around doing nothing, which, IMHO is not good for the body or mind.
As above, its a cliche, but you will soon question how you found time to work and do everything else? The everything else sort of expands....
I do miss the work people, they were (mostly) great.....but I certainly do not miss the work, the office politics, the endless meetings, the pointless training, the wasted time, the bad managers, the box ticking exercises, etc, etc.
Glad to be out of the work environment now.....

Welcome to the retired club

I will second what peter says..... Keep yourself busy....... And if you are used to working outdoors take up going for long walks regulary or you will miss the fresh air and daylight

You might want to note how quick it takes you to get used to not having to get up at silly oclock in the morning to go to work......... Took me about 4 months...... I know someone who worked in the railway and after 5 years retirement he still gets up at 5am lol..... Cant break the habit

Thanks very much everyone. My Mrs has been recovering from an op so we’re both getting back into our training routine. I can be far more consistent now with no shifts. Big plans for the new place including my modelling/model railway room so definitely going to be busy.

Just as a matter of interest Mick. Are you by any chance into restoring Triang Hornby are you ?

Congratulations and good luck.
Funny where all the time goes...

You mention retirement, you are going to get up in the morning, drift into the throne room, mug of tea in one hand, Daily Rag in the other and sit and browse through the news or lack of it... Forget it!!!
The Boss has already started work on the toilet roll list of jobs, visits to be made, to just sit there and look interested as the conversation wanders from who had the last baby, to 'Her' down the street to remembering the days gone past. holes to be dug and bags of top soil to be carted from B&Q. But it does not end there, there is daytime tv to be enjoyed, the insurmountable quizz shows, repeats of Bargain Hunt and lets not forget Loose Women whose only thing that is loose is their bladder and lord help you if you dare to reach for the tv remote when you think She has wanderd off to ZZZ land you will be within an inch of the remote and the fatal words will be uttered "I am watching that..."
As soon as the first word 'R' came out of your mouth the writing began, the plans were made... And let's not forget the weekly shop where you want to get home and spend some time on the bench - Not a chance, in the fruit and veg she will meet at least three prople she saw only yesterday, but can spend 20 minutes talking to.. There is no speeding through the shop it becomes a drudge, just look at all the other poor retirees who pass you will that hang dog look and the gentle nod as you pass each other in the condiments aisle...
So remember this warning as you sit there pondering your retirement - take a long hard look at that tiolet roll and shivver....
