To keep my mind off what's going on I am working on the layout of my proposed garage modelling room.

Its a typical garage with a window on one side of the side walls.

Am I right in saying that the bench should be at right angle to the natural light?? There will be plenty of room for a long bench but much of it would not have natural light

I must admit that both of my dedicated rooms (old house and new house, I don’t have two rooms) had light at right angles to the bench, but both were south facing. If your window is north facing I’d put the bench in front of it. You will get the best light without glare. It’s why factories had northlight roofs. The only thing you don’t really want is direct sunlight on the bench.

North West should mean that you get good light without the glare from direct sun. My bench is along the window which faces north east.

Sorry, so you mean you work with the light directly in your face, sorry to sound a tad thick lol

You should only get direct sunlight late in the day in Summer Bob. I would expect that to be fine. To be honest, if the light is too bad for glare on the few days we get direct sun you can always put up a cheap blackout blind. Decent bench lighting will eliminate shadows anyway.

Thanks Tim, I might put the bench for spraying/painting at a right angle to the window and the modelling bench in front of the window, will measure in the morning, got my builder mate coming tomorrow

Good stuff. Excellent ambient lighting is more important than where the window is to be honest. However, make sure your lighting is daylight rated or all your painting will be “off”.when you take it somewhere else ;)

Hi Bob

Lovely room Jim, many thanks for taking the time. That's answered my question perfectly

I have never seen such clearly defined carpet monster tracks in a modelling room before!

Yep, Jim's one lucky boy!

Also thinking of going into the loft, that would be better than the garage but more expensive of course

My Bench is under the windows I get the summer sun after 10 in the morning. I have the option to sit side on to the window though as the bench is L shaped.

My workroom actually deserves the title 'man-cave' - well, almost. The windows are North facing, so no direct sunlight, and about five feet from the neighbours' house wall, so not a lot of indirect light, either. And it's the Lake District, so sunshine is a rare commodity at the best of times.

In truth, it's not as bad as it sounds. Light levels are low but they're very constant, which is a lot better than wild fluctuations. And I simply rely on good artificial lighting, which is easy to sort these days.

I am a bit OCD about being tidy. I drive the missus crazy at times but we will have been married 50 years next month so she must have accepted it. It's a big room which my wife shares to use for her sewing. The photo was taken just after we fitted new Ikea cabinets all along one wall so was even tidier than usual.

How do you manage to find anything when it's not in a big heap on one side of the bench like mine lol.

Agreed a plan for my garage room with my builder mate, he's also fitting new French Dr's and decking to the back of the hour. So should be ready in about 6 weeks or so, next a big skip filling contest. Unless this bl**dy pain stops me!
