Wingnut Wings 1/32 Halberstadt Cl.II (late)

Flippin' marvellous work Allen. I think those are the biggest decals I've ever seen. I don't know if this is true for your build, but when I built something similar, I found I had to do the same bit of rigging on both sides together, or else, the model could twist.

Afternoon from the cold and rainy Bamberg Aerodrome...

Dude this is looking amazing mate and hopefully it will cross the finish line.
Thanks Bro! Still having fun and we are getting closer to the finish every day, Paul...

You really are making a cracking job of this Allen. You're solving the issues as they come up and your study and patience is paying off.
Much appreciated Jim! Solving problems is a big part of my Un-knowledge about these wing thingy's. Now that your dio is done, could you maybe scratch me up a 1/32 foamboard hanger for it??? That would be great Sir!!!...

Just caught up again Allen, some outstanding work.
Thanks so much Ian! Glad you're still looking in Sir...

Might a mist coat on the wings give a better match to your excellent work on the fuselage?
Pete
I did think about that Pete, but I would have to mask the decals to do it. Knowing My luck, I would pull some of them off while removing the masking. Thanks for idea my friend and I did come up with a plan B though. See below...

You are making a truly excellent job of this Allen. It’s going to look superb when you finish it. Really a front and centre of the cabinet job.
You are too kind Tim! I am pretty happy so far, but would have to go to Ikea to get a cabinet. Then I would have to find a place to put in my apartment. A small prob living under the roof Buddy...

Maybe the wings got a new fabric applied because of wear but the fuselage hasn’t?
That's a good idea Jakko! It could very well have happened back then. I have found a solution that I hope works after experimenting a bit over the past 2 days...

Flippin' marvellous work Allen. I think those are the biggest decals I've ever seen. I don't know if this is true for your build, but when I built something similar, I found I had to do the same bit of rigging on both sides together, or else, the model could twist.
Thanks Colin! Not sure about the flippin' part though...I take it on your kit, the wings were just painted a linen color and then the roundels applied. These huge mothers did scare me, but in the end, they came out alright. I'm using Infini elastic rigging and it stretches to 6 x the length of the piece used. I plan on stretching it till it's taunt, so not too much. Thanks for the tip Sir!!!...

I really felt masking over the decals, either the wings or the fusi thang, was too dangerous for the decals by this old git. I decide to experiment on the fusi thang and leave the wings as they are because my AB skills are not that great. Hairy sticking was the only option to tone it down. First, I did a test with Vallejo European Mud Wash on the rear underside with a flat brush,

IMG_3683.JPG
It did tone it down, but the streaking from the brush was a prob and even using water to smooth it out, just left more streaks in it. Time for a second experiment...I have oil paints that I have used a few times with decent results. I dug through them and found I didn't have the color I needed. In the windmills of my mind, I knew I had some Abteilung 502 oils stashed somewhere and finally found them. So, with a dab of 007 Raw Umber and some drops of my Citrus-Terpin, I had at it,

IMG_3685.JPG
Yea Baby, that was 'lookin' Pretty Good'!!! You can see where I left off as I didn't have anywhere else to hold the fusi thang with my fingers. Using Citrus-Terpin has 2 advantages with oil paint. The model smells good, and the oils dry quickly too. I did touchups and had no bad streaking at all. A dab of Citrus on a Q-tip cleaned any overbrush on the decals. On the bridge piece, there is a little and on the rad is some overflow, but these are easily fixed. The rad will get a black wash anyway. I can even do a second wash if it's not dark enough and to highlight the raised areas. Like Jim R said, another issue solved on my long list of 'em!!!...

I can't thank you all enough for your help and wonderful comments. Have a great weekend and stay safe...

A cunning solution, Sir! :thumb2:
Hopefully I'll be back to my bench and my models soon as I feel a sort of tickling in my fingertips. Maybe it's withdrawal symptoms?:tongue-out3:

Woah there Mr DeWire, that's some serious (not to mention SKILLFUL) problem solving there boy!
Very neat!
My God, you might actually FINISH this one!
Must be close -Can't wait!

Thank you Andrea! Wow, I take it you are not in your new house yet and still can't play at the bench. A shame my friend and I can understand why you are having those withdrawal symptoms. I hope it gets better for you soon...

Yes Dr. M, a man has to do what he has to do!!! Getting close???...Almost. Actually finishing???...Defo Buddy. Skillful???...Never heard of it..........Thanks Neil and I'm just having fun!!!...

It could be very soon Bro!!! If I don't have any more oopsies, next week might be it. Then, we can get the party started!!!...

Thank you so much Paul! I do want to finish it and maybe paint a few figs for it too. It's mostly assembly to do now Sir...

...... Steady on there Neil!! ;)
Allen!!

Much too kind Andy! You know I'm just an old mud slinger and not a Wing thingy builder like you for years. I really like the MGs too and the etch does give them a special touch. Oh, and don't worry about Dr. Merryweather...He's just trying to recover from all the ether he inhaled doing the surgery on the figs for his fuselages build...

Always thought Wingnut Wings were too tough, but you make'em look easy.
Thanks Buddy! Actually, the kits are not tough to build and the fit is excellent. The destructions do throw you around a bit though, Paul. As I see it, you have to drink 3-4 NZ beers to figure them out. Then the build is good to go without probs...

Nice bit of toning there Allen.....getting closer :thumb2:
Thanks Rick! I have used oils before, but it was 6-7 years ago, so I sorta forgot about them and their uses. Sucks when you get old!!! But you know that Bro!!!

So today I glued the left side motor cover on and while waiting for it to dry, I went about finishing the raw umber wash on the rest of the fusi thang. I then went back and gave another wash on some areas that I wasn't happy with. Before I got stupid, I gave myself a slap and quit while I was ahead. You know the old adage......Up next, was playing/painting with more parts. I painted the tires, hubcaps, rad cap, fuel tank cap, flare pistol and other tidbits. I also gave the rad a black oil wash on both sides of the wing,

IMG_3688.JPG
I then added a few goodies to the fusi thang, before I forgot and glued the bridge over the pit,

IMG_3687.JPG
I think the gages are the pilot's alarm clock and thermometer. You know, for the long flight and/or when it might be cold...I managed to also glue the flare ammo holder belt in place without mishap. Somehow, I managed to ping off the rigging wire piece, next to the 08 MG and had to CA it back in place. Hope it holds this time. Damn, I have to mount the windshield over the clock/therm thing too!!!......Lastly was closing/gluing the cowling in front of the motor. I stated earlier that it wasn't a perfect fit, but close and would need some sort of clamping till it dried. This is the second attempt,

IMG_3686.JPG
The first attempt almost ended up a total disaster and the end of this party. I had placed the clothespin in the same place, only vertically. I got up and went to use the loo and heard a dull bang. I gave Mr. Happy a fast shake and ran into the living room!!! My fusi thang and the clothespin were gone from the table!!!...WTF......The fusi landed under my seat on the hardwood floor. I grabbed it up, threw the Optivisor on my melon, and had a good look. I can only say that the TET/CA Gods were on my side today!!!!!!! Nothing pinged off and nothing broke anywhere. It seems the clothespin lost its grip and shot up in the air, sliding the fusi thang off the mat and over the edge of the table, onto the floor. Talk about lucky!!! The clothes pin landed on the other side of the table. It was time for a break with a cuppa coffee to calm the nerves and relax...Cold ones came later too!!!......

Thanks again and more to come tomorrow...

Yo! Youngerthanme,
Just caught up on your build - and when I got to the camo painting, thought you had gone back to your childhood... But no, you recovered and made the job look fantastic. I commend your skill and work here.
That's it time to sober up...

Just gets better and better Allen. :)
Some fantastic detailing for sure, pleased to hear that it's early,"pre wing" flight was damage free too. ;)

Great work with the oil wash. It's worked a treat. Lucky with the pinging clothes peg, could have been much worse. I have CAed some strips of soft rubber into the jaws of a few pegs to stop them sliding off. It only works up to a point though.

Evening good people,

The play goes on at the table and another full inspection of the fusi found no damage from yesterday's pre-flight...

Thanks my friend! All is back to normal today and the couple of Weizens last night did the trick to get me back in the groove...

Thanks Andy! I really thought it was the end of the line for this puppy and my meager attempts. I do have to finish it now, for sure...

Thanks too Jim! I was happy they worked out as good as they did. The oils had totally slipped my mind, and I have a lot of them. The clothespins are with rubber pads in them. That's why I bought them in the first place. Maybe it slipped off because of the oil wash on the cowling. I don't know and probably never will...

So. we painted up all the brass turnbuckles with black and finally glued the bridge in place over the cockpit. While letting it dry, I put a new piece of rigging in the tail to replace the one I broke off early in the build. I used the same method as the rigging for the cowling. A bit of round stretched sprue with the rigging end CA'd to it...
The kit has 2 clear parts in it. One is the fuel line gage on the top wing bridge and the other is the wind screen. After playing around, trying to find a way to affix it, I gave up. This Halberstadt is not going to have one, as it was shot up in a dogfight. End of the story!!!...
As I also mentioned earlier, the rigging from the cowling up to the bridge was going to be the hardest of them all. I would need at least 3-4 hands to do them. I made up a fusi thang holding tub so at least I could try it with 2 hands,

IMG_3689.JPG
Just a foam piece, a supperware container and two weights to keep it from tipping over. Armed with 2 sets of tweezers, I went on with threading the line through the eyelets,

IMG_3690.JPG
It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. Once they were threaded, I pulled them forward to the front and clipped the end with a red clamp (in the background), to make it taunt. With a flat shaved toothpick with a drop of CA on it, I attacked the eyelet from behind and coated the line and the eyelet. I did the same with the other side. All went well and is holding so far,

IMG_3691.JPG
I just had to nip the excess line off carefully and Viola. The hard part was done!!! I do have to glue the fuel line end under the right wing to the fuel tank outlet, next to the strut eyelets. I then did a test fit of the landing gear assembly to see how everything would line up on the fusi thang,

IMG_3692.JPG
It doesn't look too bad and the fit was good. I do need to do some paint touchups on the cowling and wing roots though. Then came a terrible shock from hell!!!

IMG_3693.JPG
Damn, we were losing the match against Erfurt!!! There was still plenty of time and we still had a chance, but after 90 minutes, we lost 2-0.........
Heartbroken, I sadly went back to work at the table and did another test fit,

IMG_3694.JPG
The wings are the heaviest parts on the Halberstadt and the landing gear assembly is the lightest......And it does wobble a bit. The wing rigging will have to be done with the plane upside down so the landing gear has no stress on it. Not a big deal, and I'll have to break out my larger wing thingy tub to do it, either way. Another pic,

IMG_3695.JPG
I also glassed the wing compass with a big drop of M Krystal Klear. It's all looking up and in the right direction now. I removed the landing gear and put my baby to bed until tomorrow...

It's a holiday tomorrow, so work will continue as usual. Thanks again folks and enjoy the day off, if you have one...
