Wingnut Wings 1/32 Halberstadt Cl.II (late)

Thread owner
Blimey Allen you're still with this, I'm impressed! It seems like a real labour of love to me and I am now totally cured of my previous temptation for a WNW kit...
Please Neil, don't be put off over a WnW's kit as they are great. The probs are not the kits' fault, but mine, the Bonehead who is building it!!! The little parts are for the particular plane you are building. Grenades, bombs, flares and such do take time to finish, but I think they will look ok when in place on her. I am still having fun my friend...

Great work as always Allen. Going to look fantastic when it’s done. Glad you managed to recover the frosty coating though…..
Thanks Tim! I hope so too. The wings looked like that mug you used to put in the freezer for your beer. Finally had a warm, windless day, so I decided to spray, but forgot to turn on my brain...I hope you are doing better too Buddy...

Dude, bet you were stressed out when you saw the result. No wonder you went out to Stammtisch !
Nice recovery though.
Not really stressed Dude 2, but felt like the village idiot. It cleaned off and now I can try it again. Stammtisch was needed as well as bowling on Saturday evening too!!! PM later...

Oh wow, at least you now have a trick up your sleeve if you want to do a winter scene :smiling2:
Morn Andy! You are so right Sir and it's a trick I never knew about!!! Live and learn...

Thanks guys and now it's time to play at the table. If it warms up a bit more today, maybe I can get a (correct) matt coat shot on the wings. I masked the strut/rigging holes on the wings yesterday...

Hmmm, just been mulling this over with Cohan.....

... after considerable reflection, he's offered to fly over and help you through the rest of the build. ;)

Thanks Andy!!! That is very kind of you and Cohan. I'm sure he would be a big help and maybe bite me on the finger when I'm about to do something stupid. I think 1/32 might be a bit too large for him though, and the immigration laws here the pits!!!...

Late evening everyone,

After the kind offer of Cohan's help from Mr. Smiff, I decided to drive on and leave the brain farts behind me! I didn't get to shoot any matt on the wings yet but went about masking the fusillier. This was a PITA from start to finish!!!...It took the last 2 days of my time. Masking the tail over the white was the worst, as the damn AK tape wouldn't stick. I used some Saran wrap to cover the rigging and taped that down with the Ak. I carefully cut the tape with a sharp blade to the contour of the white paint. No probs, BUT, the tape kept lifting up when left for 10 minutes, even after burnishing it down, many times. I used tweezers to place it, with little contact with my fingers. PO'd, I went about masking the front end and making a cover for the motor and the contact points for the cowling pieces. I tried it with Saran wrap and it was useless. I cut out some thick paper, with lots of tape and blutac, Then I mixed up a batch of 1 part Tamiya XF-4 yellow green with 4 parts XF-55 deck tan (per instructions), with 40% IPA and got the job done, or so I hoped,

IMG_3634.JPG
I took off the masking on the tail to see the results and it wasn't too bad. Only one tiny point on the white needs a dab. Now, after looking at the color after it had dried. I asked myself the €125.000 question...If the paint looks almost identical to Panzer dark yellow, why did I have to mix the batch of two colors???...Anyway,

IMG_3635.JPG
The other side,

IMG_3636.JPG
Funny that the AK tape stuck where it wanted to and not where I wanted it. The rest of the parts needing a coat,

IMG_3637.JPG
Note the tape over the radiator, left, on the upper wing piece. Stuck like there was no tomorrow. After the lozenge painting nonsense, it probably won't come off so I can paint the rad matt alu...I will leave the masking on the front of this too, till after the lozenge paint job is finished. Then gloss, decals and finally a matt coat on the whole deal. One down and 5 colors to go!!!...

More to come and have a great weekend! Think lozenge colors with brown, dk green, pale green, blue and mauve, with a few cold ones thrown in too...

Mmm,looks to be a annoying Dude1, tape that won't stick for one is frustrating.
Painting is great , what's the mix to get Panzer Yellow then ? Inquiring minds might like to have that method in case they run short ;).
Nothing has yet beaten you , press on regardless.:smiling3:

Beautiful clean work allen , despite the tapes best efforts to cause trouble ! Keep at it mate its going to be stunning , cheers tony

Just a small update tonight all. Things are looking a bit up at the table...

These things are definitely sent to try us pal, hang on in there as it's looking great
So true Mick. I even had to use cellophane tape on the front masking to hold the AK in place. Thanks for looking in my friend...

It was Dude 2 and I can't understand it myself. The mix is 1 part yellow-green, to 4 parts deck tan as I wrote above. I have a pic below to show what I mean. I'm driving on and still having fun too!!!

Thanks Tony! I am trying to do my best and sometimes against all odds. I really want to see this finished and use the stuff learned for the next WnW kit...Nooo, don't even think I've gone wing thingy...

Coming on nicely Allen.
More like coming on Andrew! I guess the nicely comes later. Thanks my friend and please keep at your studies...

After taking a look at the paint this morning, I did notice it does have a bit of a greenish tint to it. It could still be used for dark yellow though. Here's an idea of what I mean,

IMG_3639.JPG
We all know the story about paint makers during wartime and how batches could always be different and such. I picked out the 5 colors I will use for the lozenge (type) camo. I decide against using the AB as it would take 6 months to refine my skills...At least!!! I figured I could brush paint the job and tone it down when it's done. I remembered I had an AK wet palette I have never tried, so it will be my weapon of choice. I just hope it works better than their tape. I also did my first official rigging job today. A pic of the whopping 4 pieces to support the landing gear assembly, together with my 5 colors of choice,

IMG_3638.JPG
Yea, the 3 are BS colors, but they are a close match to the ones needed. The infini rigging fits into the holes on the bottom landing gear rods great. I shaved a toothpick to apply my MIG slow drying CA as it's thinner than my Deluxe glues. Damn top wouldn't come off. This is the second time it's happened. I don't know if anyone else here has had that problem with it, but even with de-bonder, I couldn't get the cap off this time. I think it's the metal pin in the cap that glues itself to the inside of the spout neck. Dumb idea from MIG, if you ask me and a mail is going to be sent to Spain about it. I had to open the bottle and dip the toothpick in to use it. OK, enough waffle for tonight. Weather permitting, a matt coat gets shot onto the wings in the morn...

Have a super weekend at the bench and thanks again for looking in...

I really thought we had this discussion about keeping your rainy crap weather over there on the Insel and not sending it over the Channel to me. I guess it fell on deaf ears as I woke up this morning, ready to shoot matt with the hissy. NOT!!! Raining cats, dogs, old birds and gerbils the whole day long!!! I decided to give the wet palette thing a whirl and attempt to do the lozenge camo job. I did the top side of the piece for the top wing and then started doing the bottom of the fusillier...lage (whatever). Only 2 pics but,

Warning!!!...If you suffer from flashbacks of the Psychedelic 60's and/or loved listening to "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida", backwards @ 45 RPM, please look away now and click on another post,

The wet palette is pretty cool, but I may have soaked the sponge and wipe with too much water. The MIG Violet stayed pretty consistent in density. The AV Model Air colors thinned out rather quickly on the paper. I had to go back and touch them up a little. The underside still needs to be finished and then it's on to the sides and spine. It doesn't have to be so perfect as the scheme will be over sprayed with a misting of thinned XF-59 Desert Yellow, shot at low pressure, to get a splatter effect overall on it. It will blend the colors together and tone them down for the effect I want.....

That's it for tonight. Lotsa hairy stick work calls in the morn. if (your) rain stops here, then maybe I can do some hissy work too. Here's hoping folks...Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!!!...

PS, Timothy Leary approves of my paint work too.........He's outside, looking in....................

I'd like to know how Dr. Leary is doing outside along with all those animals pouring on your rooftop. I guess gerbils will look peculiar even to his psychedelic mind.:upside:
Great paint job... only the brave!

Oh Allen - so much good work going on and so many problems solved. You really are doing this proud.

Great work, and thanks for the Iron Butterfly reference. Guess what I've been listening to for the last 17 minutes.

You don't want to know Andrea! It was just one of those rainy nights...Timothy and I were friends long ago, not personally though. Thanks Sir, but I'm not brave. It had to be done one way or another...

Thank you Jim! I really think I am making progress, finally, on her. Please see below my friend...

Dude, some seriously good painting there. And we all have brain farts I have at least 10 a day.
Thanks Bro! I am no way proficient at the AB yet, but getting there so the hairy was the only way. If you have 10, then I must have at least 20 brain farts a day Paul!!!...

Great work, and thanks for the Iron Butterfly reference. Guess what I've been listening to for the last 17 minutes.

Well Pete, if you were playing it backwards, then it would have been only 10 minutes long @ 45RPM. I guess you were doing it wrong
Buddy!!! Thanks for dropping in...
in-a-gada-di-vida?
Yup Paul, I think he was playing it at 33RPM, forwards...Backwards, it's Adiv-Ad-Addag-A-Ni and sounds better and shorter too!!!...

Sunday and Monday were spent with hairy stick in hand. Lotsa water changes using the 5 colors for the psychedelic fusillier work. In the end, and before going bonkers, I got the job done,

It was definitely a learning experience!!! The biggest prob was trying to work out where each color went and to try and keep them evenly spaced apart. I wasn't too worried about some brush marks or paint density (Thanks Ron) on them. There are a couple of places that will be painted gray and some masking, so they were left alone.

Today, I said the hell with it and since the sun was shining, it was time to fire up the Hissy stick. The wind was blowing, but lucky for me, in the right direction for a change. I mixed up a batch of Tamiya with 10% XF-55 deck tan, 20% X-22 clear and 70% IPA in the syringe and shook the daylights out of it. I tried it out at about 10PSI, but it wouldn't spray. I bumped it up to 15PSI and we were in business. I tested it on my plastic test sheet and it looked good. Off we went, as it was Do It or Ruin It!!! The results,

IMG_3648.JPG
IMG_3649.JPG
I didn't mask the white as I kept the spray under control and can touch up the edges later. I also didn't get the splatter effect I wanted, but I am happy with results. There is a slight sheen to the mix so I can apply the decals easier. When done with them, a coat of Vallejo Matt will seal it all and weathering will tone down the psychedelia even more...Still feeling lucky, I mixed up a batch of Vallejo Matt and shot another coat on the wings. Honestly, I feel pretty damn good that the Hissy work went great, without a hitch!!!...

Thank you all for the great comments on this. Much appreciated and keeps me going through the bad times at the table. I may not be on here as much due to a prob with the laptop throwing stopcode blue screens at me. My son should be able to fix it as he's a techie. If all else fails, I still have my iPad.......Have a good Over-the-Hump Day!!!

That's brilliant Allen, really well done. You're a brave man to paint lozenge camo.
