We sure do have collectors syndrome holding more kits than we would ever build, it just feels good to buy stuff, when it turns up in the post or bring it home from the model shop, this brings about a squirt of endorphins in the brain causing a sense of elation! . . . and then it goes into the stash never to be seen again until a thread like this comes along.
Probably most of us have way too many modelling tools and stuff than we really need for that 'just in case' scenario.
I use the 'I'm saving and preparing for my retirement' when I won't need to buy anything further, missus Miko isn't as convinced as I had hoped!

I have always had lots of hobbies and have always collected and acquired "stuff" to go with said hobbies, eg: sport, (footie, squash, golf, etc) then motorbikes, fishing, gaming consoles, vintage comics, airguns, plus few others, and now scale modelling! Plus, as an ex tradesman (plumber) and surveyor I have "collected" tools my whole working life.

For me with games console, I started with a few then went on to collect pretty much every game console ever available in the UK, and a few that were not... and it was deffo the hunting them down bit that I liked most. Once I had bought them, always mint examples, fully working, with all accessories and in originla boxes, etc, they would be stored away, rarely if ever actually used! And once I had pretty much every console (achieved few years back), I then started selling them off, gave a few away, etc and now my whole collection has gone.

With scale models, I do have a healthy turnaround, and build quite a few, on a regular basis, and I like to have tools/accessories for that particular hobby....
So I can (sort of) justify having a large(ish) stash to myself, even if no-one else is buying it, Lol!

Perhaps the hunting and gathering is scratching a primordial itch

I don’t have a large stash as I find it drags my mojo down (I know I’m odd ). However the stash I do have is in constant churn.
I tend to sell kits off after having them for a while which gives me more pennies to start buying again.

I don’t think it’s a problem though if anyone has a large stash. If it’s bringing you pleasure then great
