Steven’s 1/48 Spitfire Mk.IIa

Steven

That's coming on very nicely indeed. And as for the pilot, he is simply stunning....absolutely stunning!!

Thanks guys! 🙏

In my enthusiasm gluing things together I completely forgot to add a solid block into the fuselage so I could easily drill a hole for the rod...
So things got a bit more tricky, I ended up drilling a larger hole (3mm ~ 0,118") with a slight bank to the right.

Next I glued a piece of sprue into a 3mm orange plastic tube (closes the end off and glue-able with the fuselage).
The orange tube later fits a 2mm steel rod

The orange tube was then glued into the hole with superglue at the bottom and Tamiya at the top...

The orange tube was cut flush with the model, the 2mm steel rods fits into the tube,

Testflight - I gave the plane a slight bank to the right,

The canopy parts were glued in place with Micro Kristal Klear.

Today I masked the canopy with Tamiya tape, I did this after waking up from the night-shift, so turned out a bit sloppy.

That's all, thanks for watching - Cheers

Nice work Steven. The stand is going to look great, love the angle of bank you have set for the Spitfire. It will really help to show off that beautiful elliptical wing. Re the masking, I also tend to do canopy masks after working weird shifts, and like you they never turn out as you expect. Looks good in the photos though mate.

Thanks Joe 🙏

Finally could do some paintwork today.
First a light-green on top of the canopy for the inside color, then sprayed the plane with white primer (vallejo) and added some panel-line shading with black.

For the bottom I mixed a dark green for the panel-lines (black + olive drab primer),

For the bottom color of this Mk.IIa I sprayed 'duck egg green' (vallejo) which I believe is the same color described as 'sky'...

That's all so far, looking forward to the camo...
Thanks for reading, cheers

well I’m off this week and one day will definitely be back to modelling and I am now sold on the in-flight version.

The sky/duck egg looks great. It's a nice light shade that doesn't lose the pre-shading, unlike PRU blue !

Looks like I just managed to get caught up with this before you've completed it. Fantastic work on the pilot, well done.

Thanks for the comments guys,

This week I masked the underside with Tamiya tape,

Then sprayed 'bs dark earth' (vallejo 71.323),
Steven_Spitfire_48_132.webp

The dark earth was masked with Blu-tack and pieces of Tamiya tape,
Steven_Spitfire_48_133.webp

Then I sprayed 'bs dark green' (vallejo 71.324), I always have a hard time with this color as it takes many layers to fully cover...
Steven_Spitfire_48_134.webp

After unmasking I had these almost yellow featered edges - I had this issue in the past as well, it's a combination of 'too tick' blu-tack sausages and not enough passes on the masked edges (as the green paint covers very difficult)...
Steven_Spitfire_48_135.webp

It did bother me too much, I kept looking at it... So I restarted masking again with blu-tack, but then got frustrated and grabbed me a brush... With the brush I repainted the 'dark green' edges again and quickly tried to blend in the 'non-edge' brush stroke...

I also found the dark earth a bit too light, so added small dots of 'Winton oil color - burned umber' onto the brown camo and blended it like a filter to deepen the brown somewhat...

It always looks funny without markings, after curing I'll add a gloss coat for the decals.

Thanks for watching, cheers

Well you certainly had a journey with the painting Steve. Glad it came out alright in the end. Looks great.

Thanks guys,

Had to wait a bit for the oil filter to dry, today added a 'Vallejo polyurethane gloss varnish'. I'm always struggling to get the right finish, bit more on the 'satin' side. Lowered my air-pressure a lot and sprayed very close but it's like the over-spray-area kills the gloss finish instantly if that makes sense...

Started working on a small base, this is an Ikea lid I also used for the P-47D (2024).
Drilled a 2mm hole in the middle, cut a steel rod and sprayed it black with a spraycan.
Steven_Spitfire_48_139.webp

I thought it might be fun to add some 'cliffs of Dover' to the base, in a tiny scale of-course...
Did an experiment and made a crude simplified version of the cliffs with an 3d printer (FDM, not resin). Because of the gentle terrain slope you can clearly see the layers on top.
Steven_Spitfire_48_140.webp

The idea was to cover this with some filler, started with a powder based filler but it had quite a lot of large particles in it,
Steven_Spitfire_48_141.webp

So for the cliffs I used an acrylic putty, must admit this was a lot harder then I thought it would be. I will let this dry first and then see if I can improve the rock texture with a knife or more putty...

That's all, thanks for watching 🖐️
